We arrived in Edinburgh Scotland late afternoon on a beautiful albeit hot day. The airport was easy to maneuver making my way to the rental cars for my first time driving an English-style car on the opposite side of the road!
After driving into downtown Edinburgh, it was quickly apparent that most places including hotels didn't have dedicated parking. With a little help we were able to get situated and checked into the unique and beautiful Indigo Hotel aka The Royal British Hotel.
As the sun began to set we made our way to Calton Hill which quickly became obvious it was a popular destination to watch the sunset over Edinburgh! The 360-degree views were absolutely stunning, and the city was extraordinary no matter where you looked. So much history everywhere around you and the architecture was fascinating even in the residential areas...no siding here - all buildings are made of stone, brick or blocks which seemed to be the case in all of Scotland.
The next morning was a full day touring Edinburgh walking around Calton Hill once again before working our way up The Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle with stops along the way at places like St. Gile's Cathedral and The Elephant House...birthplace of Harry Potter!
There is so much to do and see in the city as well as the outskirts of town. The incredible history and architecture is simply amazing and to know you're walking through the paths of history going into places where William Wallace and Robert the Bruce visited, or critical wars were fought hundreds of years ago against other countries or clans within Scotland!
